What to expect: Swimmers are limited to three individual and two relay events per meet. However, there is no limit to the number of swimmers a team can enter in any of the events. The sprint format and event limitations allow for maximum participation of all swimmers in the short time allowed for meets. The pool areas are not usually very large. Each participating team is given a designated area of the pool deck. Spectators (parents) are usually on the opposite side of the pool. Swimmers are not allowed in the locker rooms except while changing before or after the meet. It is very crowded and noisy in the pool area. The hosting teams do a great job of rounding up swimmers for each of the events, but parents should be prepared to help keep their swimmers on time for the events. Parents should be aware that most pools in Europe are very warm, so even if it is cold outside they should bring shorts and a lightweight top to wear in the pool area. Wearing street shoes in an European pool is a big no-no. Be sure to bring flip-flops or pool shoes you wear only while in the pool area. Seating is usually a problem, so bring portable chairs that won't mar or damage the pool deck surface. Finally, parents should come prepared to help volunteer at the meets. Most of the meet positions require special training, but there are a few positions that parents can help with. Teams are always looking for timers!
